Maybe it’s all those rolling hills and rivers that keep them zen. It might take a while to get used to passers by wishing you good morning or neighbors being friendly but you can expect a far more laid back atmosphere in Pittsburgh. Alternatively a monthly ticket for the public transit system, known as The Port Authority of Allegheny County, costs $97 at full fare or $48 at a discount. Now that parking’s not such a problem, especially if you’re moving from New York City, you’ll probably want the convenience of a car to get around.Fuel prices are slightly higher than the national average, but that is consistent with any large city. While you will find a drop in the value of the average wage in this city, there’s downward pressure on every other cost to balance it out. Pennsylvania also has relatively low income tates. If you’re not planning to buy, the median rent for a one bedroom apartment is about $720 a month. If you’re a budding homeowner, local realtors estimate the current median purchase price at about $165,000, suddenly putting your dreams back within reach. The cost of health and housing here is also lower than the average cost for the state of Pennsylvania. From housing to food, everything is more affordable in ‘the Burgh’ than New York and also 1% lower than the national average.
